Bettye Joan Matthews, born September 30, 1942, in Washington, DC, to Robert and Lillian (MacCord) Hoff passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, with family by her side.
Bettye was the beloved wife of the late Warren Rymer Matthews. As high school sweethearts, they were devoted to one another and their love of life.
A proud graduate of the University of Maryland, Bettye earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences and Accounting. She went on to establish a successful career as a Certified Public Accountant, operating her own practice and a 1031 Exchange company for many years, earning the respect and trust of both colleagues and clients.
Bettye called several places home throughout her life, including Hyattsville, Maryland, Naples, Florida, and Westminster, Maryland. She loved traveling the world, playing competitive tennis, enjoying a relaxing round of golf, and spending time with her beloved rat terriers, Baxter and Sherman. She was an avid reader with a lifelong thirst for knowledge, who cherished time with her family and took great pleasure in a good Maryland crab cake paired with a glass of Chardonnay.
She is survived by her loving daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Dave Eckenrode of Hanover, Pennsylvania, and Sandra and Thom Sewell of League City, Texas. She was the proud grandmother of Amanda McGee and husband Micah, Steven Reightler and wife Leah, Lindsey Broz and husband Joseph, Madison Sewell, Victoria Sewell, and great-grandmother to Ian McGee.
Bettye is also survived by her siblings, David, John, Lewis, and Rebecca. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by siblings Robert, Barbara, and Janet.
A private celebration of Bettye’s life will be held at a later date for close family and friends.
