Joanne R. Lane Whitsel Michaels

Joanne R. Lane Whitsel Michaels, age 91, passed peacefully on June 7, 2026 at Mercy House, Chambersburg, PA.

She was born in Three Springs, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1935 to Otis I. Lane and Mona Margaret Roher Lane. Joanne married Ralph E. Whitsel and together they raised three daughters. Joanne will be remembered as a generous, loving mother and grandmother.

After Ralph’s passing in 1980, Joanne pursued a degree at Hagerstown Business College. She then worked in her field of medical transcription at the Waynesboro Hospital until her retirement.

Joanne is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Cynthia Wietry, Denise and Richard Wietry, Cheryl Hayduk and Mitchell Morrill. Additional survivors are-

Grandchildren: Heather Wietry, Jaime (Dan) McCleary, Ryan (Laura) Wietry, Danah (Joshua) Baker, and Tyler Hayduk;

Great-grandchildren: Trey (Alfie) Miller, Lane (Kaitlyn) Miller, Colby McCleary, Payge McCleary, Evyn McCleary, Oliver Baker, Lucille Baker, and J. Baker;

Great-great grandchildren: Leo Miller, Calliope Miller, Payslee Richards and Hadley Richards;

Siblings: C.F. “Bud” Lane, Marian Grissinger, and Gloria Whitsel.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Whitsel, grandson, Justin Hayduk, sisters and their spouses Thelma (James) Hawkins, Lillian (John) Perry, Donna (Orren) Shope, and Carol (Del) Legg, brother Scott Lane, as well as brothers-in-law Allen Grissinger and Dale Whitsel, and sister-in-law Doris Lane.

Joanne will be laid to rest at a private service in the near future at Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg.
